IT'S CALLED THINKING

Kanye Pranks Beck after Beyoncé Loses Best Album

Behold, the best moment from the Grammys.

Fresh off performing twice during the Grammys telecast and delivering the best red carpet line of the year, Kanye West leapt on stage in a pretend repeat of his 2009 interruption of Taylor Swift’s MTV Video Music Awards acceptance speech.

West would have grabbed the microphone out of Beck’s hand, as the singer had just beat Beyoncé (and a few other, lesser acts) in the Best Album category. Beyoncé’s self-titled album set digital sales records and was among the year’s best-reviewed albums. The Beck album, Morning Phase, didn’t exactly generate the same amount of buzz.

The emotions that danced across __Jay Z’s __ face as he watched from beside his wife, Beyoncé, are also worth a watch:

Beck was a good sport about West’s half-joke, beseeching the rapper to come back. “I could use your help,” Beck said as West headed back down the stairs. The moment was a much-needed spark in an otherwise largely unremarkable broadcast.

UPDATE: West dug into the half-joke after the show ended. E!’s after-Grammys hosts asked the performer what was going through his mind when he began walking to the stage. “I think he should have walked up on stage,” Kim said. West then proceeded to air out some thoughts:

“I don’t even know what [Beck] said. I just know that, the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We aren’t going to play with them no more. ‘Flawless.’ Beyoncé’s video. And Beck needs to respect artistry, he should have given his award to Beyoncé. At this point, we tired of it. What happens is, when you keep on diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration. We, as musicians, have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album, and they feel like it takes them to a different place. And then they do this promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want commercial advertising. We aren’t playing with them anymore. And by the way, I got my wife, my daughter, and I got my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing that would put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s why I didn’t say anything tonight, but you all knew what it meant when ‘Ye stepped on that stage.”

“I told you I miss that Hennesy ‘Ye,” Khloe Kardashian said, referring to the liquor West was drinking the night he interrupted Swift.

“Like the song said, I’m ‘drunk in love’ right now,” West responded, before pointing out that there was a surplus of E! branding on the set he was currently speaking from. “We have to up the taste level across the board,” West said, before encouraging Kardashian West to take a spin in front of the camera. “Never before in the history of the world has there been such beauty.” West then implored the four E! hosts to remove the E! icons from their microphones, and said that given the multiple reality-TV shows the Kardashian family has starred in for E!, the family is entitled to own a percentage of the network.
