Got Shovels? City Reminds Stamford Residents To Clear Sidewalks

Failure to clear sidewalks could result in citations and fines, officials say.

Even though this week’s snowstorm wasn’t a blizzard, there’s still plenty of snow to shovel — and Stamford officials are reminding residents to clear their sidewalks.

City ordinance states that sidewalks must be cleared within 12 hours after the end of snowfall. Local property owners bear the responsibility for clearing sidewalks abutting their property and making them safe for pedestrians. The city has received reports that sidewalks in highly trafficked areas have not yet been cleared.

“Many residents depend on our sidewalks for travel, including school children and seniors, and clearing them for safe passage is critical to public safety. We are again asking for residents and businesses to do their part by clearing snow from the sidewalks near their home or business,” Mayor David Martin said in a statement.

Civil citation officers, if necessary, will be deployed to examine problem areas and remind residents to clear their sidewalks. If sidewalks remain uncleared, a fine may be levied. The fine is $90 per day, per offense.

Residents may contact Citizen’s Service at 203-977-4140 with questions.
