Kansas City Chiefs reporter Adam Teicher revises his season prediction at the midway point of the season:

Preseason prediction: 8-8

Revised prediction: 10-6

Why the Chiefs will finish better: As opposed to last season, when Kansas City lost six of their last eight (including the playoffs) after starting 9-0, what the Chiefs have going now looks to be sustainable. The Chiefs aren’t living off turnovers this time. In fact, they’ve forced just five this season, so they’re due to have a few balls bounce their way in the second half. Instead, they’re far more solid on defense. They don’t have to blitz as frequently to get pressure on the quarterback, so they’re allowing far fewer big pass plays. They dominate third downs defensively, so the Chiefs don’t spend a lot of time with their defense on the field.

On offense, the Chiefs aren’t spectacular. They don’t generate many big plays. But they are the model of efficiency. They run the ball effectively, they commit few turnovers and they move the chains. They are one of the NFL’s best teams in converting on third down. The Chiefs are also showing signs of coming around on special teams after a slow start.

The Chiefs are getting plenty of help from unheralded players. Defensive end Allen Bailey is in his fourth year with the Chiefs but first as a starter. Linebacker Josh Mauga was signed as a free agent on the day before the start of training camp. Safety Husain Abdullah was out of football for the season in 2012. Each is making a big contribution this season.
