Yolanda rehabilitation to be completed by 2016 – Palace

The rehabilitation of areas hit by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) will be completed by 2016—the year President Benigno Aquino III will relinquish his post.

In an interview in Malacañang on Wednesday, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said 30 percent of the 25,000 projects in the comprehensive Yolanda rehabilitation master plan will be finished by the end of this year.

He added that half of these projects will be undertaken next year, while the remaining 20 percent will be done by 2016.

"Lahat po ‘yon may timeline. Ang pokus kanina, ano na ‘yung natapos noong 2014, ano pa ‘yung gagawin sa 2015, at ano naman ‘yung matitira pang proyekto sa 2016," Coloma told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

Aquino met with Cabinet officials on Wednesday to set priorities for Yolanda rehabilitation efforts.

These rehabilitation efforts are guided by a comprehensive master plan Aquino approved last week.

The powerful typhoon cut a swath of devastation across central Philippines, leaving 6,300 people dead and displacing over 1.4 million families.

The government has been criticized for its supposedly slow response in Yolanda's aftermath, but Malacañang maintained that its efforts to rebuild areas devastated by the powerful typhoon meet international standards. — ELR, GMA News
