DA: Times Square Elmo Impersonator Indicted On Extortion Charge

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The man who infamously shouted anti-Semitic slurs while dressed as Elmo has been indicted for allegedly attempting to extort millions of dollars from the Girl Scouts.

As WCBS 880's Irene Cornell reported, Dan Sandler, 49, has been indicted for trying to turn his widely publicized criminal history to his own advantage. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Wednesday.

He has been charged with trying to extort $2 million from the Girl Scouts of America for allegedly threatening to go public with false claims that the organization arranged sexual encounters between adult men and underage girls at a scout camp, according to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance.

Sandler, who also goes by the name Adam Sandler, is also charged with harassing and stalking a Girl Scouts employee with dozens of threatening and bizarre emails and photos, Cornell reported.

Sandler had worked briefly for the Girl Scouts on a short-term computer project.

He was caught on the extortion charges in San Francisco while wearing his Elmo costume and was brought to New York on Tuesday, according to the DA's office.

Last year, Sandler was convicted for grabbing little girls and screaming anti-Semitic rants in Times Square while dressed as Elmo.

He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in that incident.
