CHARLESTOWN, S.C. (AP) - The College of Charleston will eliminate its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs after this academic year.

College athletic director Joe Hull announced the move Friday. He said the school is also shutting down its Stern Center pool after the spring semester, citing expensive repairs and continued maintenance costs on the 40-year-old facilities.

There are 23 men and 27 women on the school’s rosters for this season. Hull said any scholarship commitments for athletes would be honored if they chose to stay at the College of Charleston. Athletes who wished to transfer would be granted a release to compete a new school in 2015-16.

Hull said cutting swimming and diving is part of the financial reality faced by athletic departments across the country.
